Five Star Direct Democracy Party advocates a new direction for Global Britain with the establishment of a trading bloc incorporating the 54 Commonwealth countries, with whom the UK retains historic ties, a common language, and shared legal system. To be headed by a re-established Commonwealth Institute in London, operating under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Michael of Kent.

5 Star proposes a tariff-free area, or, where necessary, reciprocal tariffs, in a modernized system of imperial preference; a backward glance to critics perhaps, but with an eye firmly fixed on forging prosperity for the next 50 years. Thereby harnessing the current growth trend from West to East. Therein lies our future, not with the EU and it’s ossifying structure, which enabled China to dump cheap steel to destroy six steel mills in Wales and devastate our ship-building industry.

Pragmatic Partnerships to Promote Britain’s Manufacturing Industry

Shipments of iron ore from Australia will enable the UK to rebuild those industries and our manufacturing base; though our energy needs can be met by the import of oil and natural gas from Russia. 5 Star does not subscribe to the Anglo-American policy of Russophobia, indeed we oppose such a policy. A trade treaty with Russia is eminently feasible since our cultural ties go back more than 200 years. We believe in building bridges, not burning them.

Campaign for Exit of the Republic of Ireland from the European Union

On Ireland, 5 Star will support the Irish in holding a referendum on withdrawal from the EU. For over 25 years Eire enjoyed a cascade of subsidies to build infrastructure, etc. That tide has now begun to reverse, and continued membership will come at an exponential rise in cost once the economic penalties become unmissable. The opportunity will then arise for Eire to bathe in the warm waters of the Commonwealth.

Northern Ireland - Reaffirming the Permanent Indivisibility of the Union

Last but by no means least, 5 Star excoriates the bumbling incompetence of Boris Johnson on Northern Ireland, and we shall press hard for the UK / EU agreement to be terminated when it comes up for review in December 2021 so that the UK leaves on WTO terms only. If Westminster is minded to refuse, N.I. has other means at its disposal to restore its constitutional place in the United Kingdom, indeed it has a powerful ally in the fishing industry which has been sold down the river, to mix a metaphor.

Promoting Mutually Beneficial Trading Relationships and Sustainable Growth

Rather than using trade as a political weapon by which sovereign nations are leaned upon to legislate with respect to the sensibilities of foreign powers rather than in line with the democratic expression of the will of the people of that country - with the exception of nations that continue to turn a blind eye to egregious breaches of fundamental individual rights and liberties - 5 Star will campaign to establish protocols whereby would-be trading partners may propose reciprocal free-trade deals that are limited to sectors assessed by both partners to be non-damaging to the industries that already operate within Britain and the proposed new partner country.

Here then is our vision, a policy within our grasp, an opportunity to be seized with both hands. And 5 Star is the only political party in the UK with the foresight to promote such a better future.

Countries have turned in on themselves during Covid-19. It is alarming the extent to which people now seem to fear their Governments and so many have been silenced into submission.
